The wait is over!
Overton’s Cold War-era T41E2 tank, also known as a M41A2 “Walker Bulldog” tank, has been restored and a grand ceremony will take place this Saturday, June 14, 2025. This tank has guarded Overton’s historic downtown Main Street entrance since March 1969.
VFW Elwood Perkins Post 8336 will host a ceremony with the newly painted and restored tank at 8 a.m. Quartermaster Phillip Mullins said, “We will unveil the tank and celebrate the army’s 250th birthday. There will be a couple of guest speakers and we will have cake in honor of the army’s birthday.”
This restoration project included repairing exterior broken parts and painting the exterior of the tank, undertaken by veterans of VFW Post 8336 under the stewardship of Garren Lee Fulmer and Post Commander Darcy Bushman.
Mullins said, “We couldn’t have done any of this without the help of volunteers and businesses who generously donated time and services.”
The VFW thanks Inside Scoop, Simplot Silica for donating the sand for sand-blasting, Total Crane Solutions for providing tools and equipment for repairs and Moapa Valley Rotary for donating funds for the paint and supplies.
Moapa Valley’s M41 tank was built by Cadillac Gage Motor Co. about 1955. The M41 was an American light tank developed for armed reconnaissance purposes. These tanks were designed after World War II and rushed into production for the Korean War. However, they were too late for Korea and too early for the Vietnam War. Most were sold to Vietnam and other allied nations as they were deemed too heavy for airborne reconnaissance operations and their guns were not large enough for armor engagements.
Overton’s tank was secured through Senator Howard Cannon’s help from the US Army’s Tank Automotive Command by Harry Perkins, then commander of Post 8336, and members of the local American Legion Post 38.
The public is invited to this event to welcome the tank home.
